Business Summary
Business Summary answers one question: how did the business do over this period, and how does that compare with the period before it? It is the page to open before a bookkeeping session, a lender conversation or a quarter-end review.
What it shows
| Panel | What it contains |
|---|---|
| Income | Total money in for the period, with the prior period underneath |
| Expenses | Total money out for the period, with the prior period underneath |
| Net profit | Income minus expenses, with the margin as a percentage of income |
| Avg monthly net | Net profit divided by the number of months in the period, plus the transaction count and how many accounts contributed |
| Monthly cash flow | A month-by-month chart of income against expenses |
| Expenses by category | The largest expense categories, each with its amount and its share of total expenses (top 15 rows) |
| Top expenses | The merchants you spent most with, with the number of transactions each |
| Recurring commitments | Merchants you pay on a roughly monthly cadence, with the typical amount and how many months they were active — headed by the combined monthly total |
The prior period is always the same length as the one you selected, ending the day before it starts. So a 90-day selection is compared against the preceding 90 days.
Features
| Feature | What it does |
|---|---|
| Period selector | Choose the window: last year from your latest statement (the default), last calendar year, last 6 months, last 3 months, this month, or a custom from/to date pair |
| Prior-period comparison | Every headline figure carries the equivalent figure for the preceding period of the same length |
| Category breakdown | Expenses grouped by category with each category's share of the total |
| Recurring detection | Identifies merchants billed on a monthly cadence and totals them into a monthly commitment figure |
| Excel export | A multi-sheet workbook (.xlsx) covering the summary, cash flow, income, expenses, merchants and recurring commitments |
| PDF export | A short printable report for owners, accountants and lenders |
| CSV export | A flat file of the same figures for spreadsheets and imports |
How to use it
- Open Business Summary.
- Pick a period from the selector. The page reloads with the new window and its matching prior period.
- Read the four headline cards to see whether income, expenses and net moved against the previous period.
- Use Monthly cash flow to find the months that drove the change.
- Use Expenses by category and Top expenses to find where the money went.
- Check Recurring commitments for the fixed monthly base you are carrying.
- Choose Excel, PDF or CSV to download the same figures. The file is named after the period it covers.
Notes and limits
- If you leave the period unset, the summary covers your full span of uploaded data — from your earliest transaction to your latest.
- Transactions with no category are grouped and shown as Uncategorized. Categorising them changes the breakdown, not the totals.
- A merchant is only listed as a recurring commitment when it appears in at least three separate months with a roughly monthly gap between charges. One-off or irregular payments are excluded. The listed amount is the typical charge, not the period total.
- Recurring commitments show at most 20 merchants; top expenses and top income sources show at most 10 each.
- Figures cover every bank account in your workspace. The number of contributing accounts is shown on the Avg monthly net card.
- Avg monthly net divides by the number of calendar months the period touches, so a part-month at either end still counts as a month.
- Reports are produced from the statements you have uploaded. If a period looks light, check that the statements covering it have finished processing.
- The volume of statement pages you can process each month depends on your plan's page allowance — see Plans & limits.
This report totals every transaction in the period as recorded, with no conversion, and labels the result with the first currency it encounters. If the period spans accounts in more than one currency, the headline figures add unlike amounts and the currency shown will not describe all of them. Use Consolidated, which reports each currency separately, or restrict the period to a single-currency account.
