Spending drilldown

The Spending drilldown answers "what did I actually spend it on?" — first by category, then by the individual merchants inside a category, and then from several angles that show how the mix changes over time.

What it shows

The screen is a strip of tabs. The first is the breakdown; the rest are alternative views of the same period's spending.

TabWhat it contains
BreakdownA donut of spending by category. Click a slice to list that category's merchants beside it, with a Total row, plus a second donut splitting that category by merchant.
Spending ParetoCategories ranked highest to lowest with the cumulative share — the 80/20 of your spend
Spending composition over timeA stacked area of the category mix month by month; the six largest categories are named, the rest are grouped as "Other"
SeasonalitySpending totalled by calendar month (January to December), so seasonal and festive peaks stand out
Spending fingerprintA radar comparing your top categories in this period against the immediately preceding period of the same length
Top merchants treemapThe largest merchants sized by total spend

How to use it

  1. Set the period at the top of the page.
  2. On Breakdown, read the donut for the shape of your spending, then click the largest slice.
  3. Read the merchant list beside it — the Total row confirms the slice total.
  4. Switch to Spending Pareto to see how few categories account for most of the spend.
  5. Switch to Spending fingerprint to check whether this period differs from the one before it.
  6. Use Seasonality and Spending composition over time when you want the pattern across months rather than a single total.

Notes and limits

  • Spending only. Every panel on this screen counts money leaving the account. Income is on the Income analytics screen.
  • The period filter. Presets are: last year up to your latest statement (the default), last year to today, last six months, last three months, this month, and a custom from/to pair. The window is inclusive and matched on posted date. It is shared across the Analytics tabs, so switching tabs keeps your selection. Until the period resolves, the screen shows nothing rather than briefly showing every year of data.
  • The "previous period" in the fingerprint is the window of the same length ending the day before your selected period starts.
  • Merchants are grouped by their recognised name, so variants of the same merchant collapse into one row. Where no merchant could be recognised, the transaction description is used instead.
  • Long lists are trimmed. Merchant breakdowns cover the top 50 merchants, the treemap shows the top 14, and the composition chart names the six largest categories and groups the remainder.
  • Amounts are totalled as recorded and are not converted between currencies.
  • Categories come from your own category list, so renaming or recolouring a category changes the labels here.
