Investments
Investments brings together two different things: a register of holdings you enter and maintain yourself, and the amount you actually moved into investments in a period, which is read from your statements.
What it shows
| Panel | What it contains |
|---|---|
| Invested in period | Total money moved into investments over the selected period, taken from transactions categorised as investments |
| Invested by month | A bar chart of that same figure broken down by month |
| Market value | The value of your holdings, from the quantity and last price you entered |
| Cost basis | What your holdings cost, from the quantity and average cost you entered |
| Unrealized P&L | Market value minus cost basis |
| Return | That difference as a percentage of cost basis, with the number of holdings |
| Holdings table | One row per holding: symbol, name, asset class, quantity, average cost and last price, with edit and delete actions |
The two halves are independent. Invested in period comes from your bank data. Everything else comes from what you typed into the holdings table.
Features
| Feature | What it does |
|---|---|
| Manual holdings register | Add, edit and delete holdings yourself. There is no brokerage connection and no price feed — the figures reflect exactly what you enter |
| Asset classes | Classify each holding as equity, fixed income, crypto, ETF, mutual fund, commodity, real estate, cash equivalent or other |
| Per-holding currency | Each holding carries its own currency code |
| Portfolio metrics | Cost basis, market value, unrealized P&L and return, recalculated whenever you save a holding |
| Invested from statements | The invested figure and monthly chart are derived from your transactions, not from the holdings table |
| Period selector | Choose the window for the invested figure: last year from your latest statement (the default), last calendar year, last 6 months, last 3 months, this month, or a custom from/to pair |
How to use it
- Open Investments.
- Choose Add holding. Enter the symbol, name, asset class, quantity, average cost, currency and last price, then save. The portfolio cards update.
- Repeat for each holding you want to track.
- To correct a holding — most often the last price — use the edit action on its row and save.
- Use the period selector at the top to change the window for Invested in period and the monthly chart.
- Use the delete action to remove a holding you no longer hold.
Notes and limits
- Holdings are entered by you. BankStmt does not connect to a broker, and does not create or update holdings from your transactions. Nothing on this page is reconciled against a custodian.
- Prices do not update themselves. Market value uses the last price you typed. If you never update it, the figure will drift from reality. Where a holding has no last price, its market value falls back to its cost, so unrealized P&L for that holding reads as zero.
- Cost basis is quantity multiplied by the average cost you entered. Where no average cost is entered, that holding contributes nothing to cost basis.
- Return is expressed against cost basis. With a cost basis of zero, return shows as 0%.
- Invested in period counts money out only — payments into investments. Money coming back from an investment category, such as dividends, is not netted off. It is a contributions figure, not a performance figure.
- Invested in period depends on your transactions being categorised as investments. If the figure looks low, check the categorisation of the relevant transactions.
- Portfolio totals are added up as entered. Take care if you hold positions in more than one currency, since each holding carries its own currency code.
- Holdings are yours: they belong to your own user, not to everyone in the workspace.
