Categories

Categories are the buckets transactions are sorted into. Every screen that groups money by type — spending breakdowns, income analysis, business summaries, tax reports — reads these categories, so this page is where you decide what those breakdowns look like.

What it shows

Categories is a tab under Settings. It lists every category in your account in an editable table:

ColumnWhat it holds
NameThe category's display name, with its icon. Categories supplied with the product are marked system.
KeyA short stable identifier for the category.
KindWhat sort of category it is: expense, income, transfer, investment, tax, fee or other.
ColorThe colour used for this category in charts.

Each custom category also has a delete action at the end of its row.

Features

FeatureWhat it does
Default categoriesA starter set is supplied with your account and marked system.
Custom categoriesAdd your own categories with a name, key, kind, icon and colour.
Inline editingEdit a name, key or kind directly in the table; the change is saved as you leave the cell.
Colour pickerPick a category's chart colour from its row.
DeleteRemove a custom category. System categories cannot be deleted.
Per-language namesA category can carry a name for each language; the app shows the name for your language and falls back to the base name where no translation exists.

How to use it

  1. Open Settings → Categories.
  2. To add one, select New category, then enter a name, a key, and choose a kind. The icon and colour are optional.
  3. Save. If you leave the colour blank, an unused colour is assigned for you.
  4. To adjust an existing category, edit its name, key or kind directly in the table, or use the colour swatch to change its chart colour.
  5. To remove a custom category, use the delete action on its row and confirm.

Notes and limits

  • Editing categories changes the figures on other screens. Categories are how spending and income are grouped, so renaming, re-typing or deleting one changes what the analytics screens show for existing transactions as well as new ones.
  • The key is fixed after creation. You can change a category's display name freely, but the key set in the create dialog cannot be edited in that dialog afterwards.
  • Colours must be unique. Two categories cannot share the same colour — if you pick one that is already in use, the change is rejected and the reason is shown.
  • System categories can be edited but not deleted. You can rename or recolour them; the delete action is not offered.
  • Deleting a category removes it from this list. Review the analytics screens afterwards to check the breakdowns still read the way you expect.
